Call for young and old to unite in card campaign to give Droitwich's lonely people a better Christmas

AN APPEAL has gone out for volunteers to help a heart-warming festive campaign which has been launched in Droitwich to give lonely and vulnerable people a more enjoyable Christmas.

The idea is for people of all ages to make their own Christmas cards and festive drawings with messages for those who have no-one to celebrate the festive season with.

Spa mum Louise Curtis, from Chawson, has set up a postbox in Morrisons and St Andrew’s Church for adults and youngsters to post their Christmas cards and drawings.

Age UK and Droitwich Food Bank will then hand out to the cards to the elderly, homeless and other isolated people to put a smile on their faces.

The 37-year-old was inspired to run the ‘Send a Card and Make this Christmas Special’ campaign in the town after she saw it in Kidderminster last year.

Originally run by Marissa Robinson, the successful scheme has since seen hundreds of cards sent out across the county.

Children from Chawson First School have also been making cards which Louise will personally distribute along with her three children.

And Waitrose has got in touch with Louise to say it would be happy to also have a postbox there.

She said: “I only decided to do it a week ago but I’ve had a great response and it has really snowballed.

“Age UK will be working alongside the Foodbank in Droitwich which distributes care packages to vulnerable people.

“They will take the cards with them to help put a smile on the faces of the care home residents.

“I went through a hard time where a foodbank supported me for three months. I was in a situation where I needed help so this year I want to give something back. I have felt isolated but knowing someone is out there who cares gives you a warm feeling.

“It’s great that the school and supermarkets are on board. We need as many people as possible to make the scheme a success.” she added.

If anyone is interested in sending a card, write it out to ‘Someone Special’ and post it in the post boxes at Morrisons or St Andrew’s Church before December 16.
